Urine
Why Do I Have Such An Awful Odor?
Urine contains a substance called "uric acid" which goes into the carpet sterile; yet, within minutes bacterium starts to attack the urine. The longer a urine contamination sits untreated, the worse it usually gets. The reason why is because of bacterial activity. The ammonia smell, or "off gassing" as we call it, is actuaaly caused by bacterial emmisssions and not the urine itself. Once the bacteria starts attacking urine, the bacteria multiply which causes the smell to worsen until the source of contamination is neutalized and removed.
Urine usually enters the carpet form the top side. As the urine is emitted, it tends to spread downward and outward to a larger size in the padding and subsurface. Many times a small urine spot that is detected freom the topside is double or triple in size by the time it reached the padding and subsurface. Depending on quanity of urine, frequency and how fast you were able to treat the area, this will determine if it has reached the subsurface. Since each layer of contamination needs to be treated, an area larger than the visable spot on the surface will usually have to be decontaminated or replaced. The method that we use effectively treats the carpet and padding. We do not seal or replace the subsurface.
Why Does It Smell Worse When It's Damp Out?
When bacteria attacks uric acid, the bacterium leave behind a crystalline waste which is "hygroscopioc", meaning that it constantly draws moisture from the environment. So the more moisture in the air, the more the odor intensifies.
Try This Recipe For Success:
Scrape up residue. Blot dry with a dry WHITE absorbent towel. Bolt with a WHITE aborbent towel saturated with white vinegar. Apply the white towel saturated in white vinegar to the affected area and weihgt it down with a flat, heavy object, such as a heavy book . Remove the next day. Make sure you have a barrier between the wet towel and the book, so not to get the book wet.
NOTE: On wool, urine frequently bleaches out the dyes, especially if not immediately treated.
If you are unsuccessful in removing the odor or discoloration, give us a call. We'll be happy to help! We have special chemicals, and equipment to remove pet urine smell and / or discoloration.
Vomit
Vomit is strongly acidic and therefore can severly stain carpet and upholstery.
Clean Up Directions:
Blot dry with a dry white absorbent towel. Blot with lukewarm water with a white towel. Blot with 2 tablespoons of household ammonia in 1 cup water. Blot with a solution of 1 cup white vinegar per 2 cups water. Blot dry with a dry white absorbent towel. Apply a one - half inch layer of white (no print) paper towel to the affected area, and weight down with a flat heavy object. Remove the next day. Remember, if the heavy object can not become wet then put a barrier between the paper towels and that heavy object.
Feces
Clean Up Direction:
Removing feces stains can be accomplished by first scraping up any excess with an old spoon or spatula. Using a mixture of 2 tablespoons of ammonia to 1 cup water, blot the stain to remove residue. Rinse with cold water. Repeat if all of the stain is not removed. To remove lingering carpet odor from pet feces, sprinkle baking soda on the stain.. Let the baking soda sit overnight, and then vacuum.
